2015, Here We Come!

It's hard to believe that another year has come and gone, but here we are! Parachute has had an exciting 2014 to say the least. In this issue, you'll find stories that capture some of our favourite moments this fall.

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank our partners, stakeholders, sponsors, donors and fans for their support, feedback and collaboration this year. We are a small charity with a big vision, and your support is vital to our work. Injury prevention is a collective movement - a movement that's gaining momentum with every passing month. Each and every one of you is making a difference by helping Canadians to live long lives to the fullest, and for that we extend our sincere gratitude.

We're excited to put our 2015 plans into action, and hope that you'll join us as we strive to raise awareness, prevent injuries and save lives in the year to come.
Keeping Pedestrians Safe with FedEx Canada

Our pedestrian safety programs have had an unprecedented response this fall, allowing us to directly address issues facing both children and teens.

In November, our Moment of Silence event raised awareness for pedestrian safety, along with the release of our teen pedestrian safety poll results. This poll demonstrated the magnitude of the issue: 51% of Canadian teens report that they have either been hit or almost hit by a car, bike or motorcycle. Learn more about the poll, and our pedestrian safety initiatives.

TD I ThinkFirst! Contest

Each year, the I ThinkFirst! contest introduces kids in grades K-8 to the idea that injuries - especially concussions - are preventable. We challenge kids to create artwork showing why and how they try to prevent injury when they're active at play, school or home. The contest aims to highlight the importance of brain and spinal cord injury prevention.

This year, we received 149 submissions from 177 students from schools across Canada. Our judging panel had to make some difficult decisions, but they were ultimately able to select 3 winning classrooms, 5 top individual/team submissions and 3 honourable mentions. Parachute's Horizon is Now Live

One of our major 2014 accomplishments has been the launch of Parachute's Horizon, thanks to support from our National Development Sponsor, Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life, as well as the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation. We dreamed big with this project, and we're proud of the result: a central, user-friendly hub featuring evidence-based, leading practice interventions, resources and more. This is Canada's first stop for injury prevention solutions.

Parachute's Evidence Framework

This year, Parachute developed an evidence-synthesis framework to help incorporate evidence into the organization's decision-making processes. The project was a great success, and also resulted in a journal article titled "The development of a framework to integrate evidence into a national injury prevention strategy." The article was recently published in the Journal of Public Health. You can access the abstract  here.

Parachute's Annual Giving Campaign

Do you know someone who has sustained a concussion? Chances are that you do. This year, Parachute's giving campaign is raising awareness of the effects of concussion, and sharing the stories of three young people who have suffered from them.

We welcome donations of any amount, which enable us to continue to work towards our vision of an injury-free Canada. Read more about this year's campaign, or click here to donate today. Will you #GivetoPrevent?
